IMO if you're buying one that's a few years old and has some mileage, but it shifts fine, you're probably in the clear. I spoke to a tranny builder a while back about them, and he said they'll shift ok with good fluid, a good shifter and that bushing insert that whiteline sells, but it's hit or miss as to whether you'll get a good one. They were built in China, yes really, and I think QC was an issue.īasically, if you find a used one and it drives fine, it'll probably be okay, but there were tons of users with issues on brand new trannys.

If you ever want to track your car, the 13.2" rotors on the 5.0 will be overwhelmed if you do any track days.Īll in all, pretty solid cars. There was a TSB issued years ago about it, so it's probably a non issue. Also some 2011's had an issue with crank position sensors that would cause a misfire at 4000rpm, mostly on the manual cars. I can pull a strut in about 20 minutes on these cars.ĮPAS power steering on the 2011's had some early failures. Control arms and strut mounts have been an issue on this car since day 1. Listen carefully for clunks or grunting over bumps. Listen for a tick at idle on the 5.0 - some do it, some don't, but I don't think it affects their longevity. The 6R80 features "Filled for Life" low viscosity synthetic transmission fluid (MERCON LV), though a fluid flush is recommended at 150,000 miles if your truck falls under the classification of "Severe Duty" operation. Ford has stated that while the transmission is used in multiple applications, each transmission is optimized and integrated differently depending on the engine it is mated to. The 6R80 can be found behind the 3.7L V6 all the way up to the 6.2L V8. This provides exceptional towing performance when needed, while maximizing fuel economy by offering low engine speeds while cruising. The transmission has a relatively low 1st gear and two overdrive gears, the highest of which is 0.69:1. Most notable of the improvements was the addition of a one-way clutch that provided smoother 1-2 up-shifts and 2-1 down-shifts. For the 2011 model year, the transmission was revised to provide smoother shifts, improved fuel economy, and overall better shift performance.
